Blackfeet Community College, Fremont County Public Schools, Hopa Mountain, and Oglala Lakota College are working to develop year-round Native Science Field Centers (NSFC) and Native Science Field Programs that integrate traditional knowledge, language, and Western science methods. Native Science Field Programs are designed to engage youth and adults in field experiences that build from basic survey skills to mapping, monitoring, and decision-making. Each Native Science Field Center (NSFC) is creating outdoor experiences for youth and adults to encourage their long-term involvement with their environment and link them to other environmental science learning opportunities. This initiative is also designed to integrate indigenous and scientific ways of knowing about the environment with local language and culture preservation efforts to encourage the use of this knowledge in monitoring, management, and community-based ecological restoration efforts. NSFC field sites or "outdoor classrooms" reconnect youth and adults with their environment through cultural and scientific field programs.
